REMOVAL

1) Remove battery and battery bracket. Remove air cleaner and airflow meter. Disconnect starter motor wiring. Remove starter. Disconnect electrical connectors, control cables, shift linkage and hoses as necessary for removal. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transaxle fluid.

2) Remove front axle shafts. See the AXLE SHAFTS article in the DRIVE AXLES section. Remove bolts securing front exhaust pipe brackets (if necessary). Remove dust cover. Index mark torque converter in reference to drive plate. Remove torque converter bolts.

3) Support engine. Set transaxle jack under transaxle. Remove transaxle mounts. Remove engine-to-transaxle bolts. Carefully lower transaxle.

INSTALLATION

1) Before installing torque converter, measure drive plate runout with a dial indicator. If runout exceeds .020" (.5 mm), replace drive plate. Install torque converter into transaxle, aligning index marks made during removal.

2) Ensure torque converter is seated by measuring distance from drive plate mounting pad to engine mating surface of transaxle. If distance is not as specified, torque converter is not seated. See the DRIVE PLATE MOUNTING PAD DEPTH table.

3) To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Apply sealant to torque converter bolts before installing bolts. Rotate crankshaft several times to ensure torque converter moves freely without binding. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. Refer to the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
