SERVICE INTERVAL
Inspect fluid level every 15,000 miles or 12 months. Change fluid as needed. Under severe conditions, change fluid every 30,000 miles or 24 months.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
Transaxle
1) Check fluid with engine and transaxle at normal operating temperature. With vehicle standing level and at idle, shift transaxle through all positions and return to Park.
2) Clean area around dipstick. Remove dipstick, wipe clean, insert and withdraw. Level should be between "H" and "L" marks. If level is not as indicated, add fluid as necessary.
3) Dipstick on some models may be marked with HOT and COLD

ranges. Use COLD range if fluid is 86-122 F (30-50 C) and vehicle was not driven before checking level.
NOTE: Normal fluid should be clear with a Pink color and should not have a strong burnt odor.
RECOMMENDED FLUID
Transaxle Dexron-IIE ATF.

DRAINING & REFILLING
Transaxle
1) Remove drain plug, and allow fluid to drain. Install drain plug and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Add fluid through fill tube.
2) Warm transaxle to normal operating temperature. Shift transaxle through all gears. Return to Park. Check fluid level. Add fluid as necessary.
NOTE: Band adjustments are not part of on-vehicle adjustment
procedures. Band adjustments should only be performed during
bench inspection or overhaul.
THROTTLE VALVE CABLE
1.6L
1) Press spring loaded lock plate on throttle cable at engine side bracket to release cable. See Fig. 1. Move adjusting tube toward engine side bracket to remove all play. Release lock plate.
2) Quickly open throttle plate to wide open throttle position. Measure throttle cable stroke "L" between full throttle and idle. If stroke "L" is not within specification, adjust cable. See the THROTTLE VALVE CABLE STROKE SPECIFICATIONS table. While road testing vehicle, note kickdown point.

GEARSHIFT LINKAGE
NOTE: Move shift lever through all gear positions. If each detent
cannot be felt and shift lever pointer does not align with
each position indicator, adjust gearshift linkage.
1) Move shift lever to Park. Loosen lock nut holding shift cable to transaxle shift shaft lever. Transaxle end of shift cable is slotted to allow for adjustment.
2) Ensure transaxle is fully engaged in Park. Tighten shift cable lock nut. Ensure shift lever moves smoothly and without sliding noise. If necessary, apply grease to contacting areas of shift shaft lever and shift cable.
NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH
1) Neutral safety switch operates back-up lights and prevents starting except in "P" and "N" positions. To adjust, place shift lever in "N" position. Ensure transaxle is in Neutral (transaxle shift shaft lever should be in vertical position). See Fig. 2.
2) Loosen neutral safety switch bolts. Rotate switch until correct size alignment pin can be inserted through shift shaft lever and switch arm. See NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ALIGNMENT PIN table. Tighten neutral safety switch bolts and remove pin.
3) Check continuity through starter circuit of neutral safety switch. Continuity should exist only in Neutral and Park positions.
